Math method Memorization Techniques - How to Memorize Formulas in Minutes

Most people have a hard time memorizing mathematical formulas. Yet, some tests need memorizing formulas and students have a hard time with it.

I have advanced a technique to learn those formulas speedily and keep them in memory for weeks without reasoning about them again. I used it in my last statistics exam to memorize roughly 60 formulas and after half a year I am still able to write them down.

The hardest part of this technique is to be able to find the right formula for the given question.

Because it is not about understanding the formula. It is about memorizing each part of it. Quickly.

Here is how you do it in three steps:

Break the formula up in all parts you need to memorize (variables, numbers, operands) Substitute all parts with something you can remember (there is a simple formula to it, which I will cover in just a second) Glue all parts back together by telling a crazy story

After you determined what parts you need to remember in step 1, you will now learn how you can substitute those abstract parts with something we can remember.

After you have understood how this technique is working you should create your own substitution rules because they commonly work good that way. Until then, here are mine:

Variables: Animals starting with the letter of the variable Numbers: If numbers are combined with variables, picture "two apes" for "2a". If its like "a+2" I picture an ape running towards two things (like bananas). Plus: all things combined with a plus I picture in a row like minuscule ducks running behind their mum one after another. Minus: I remember minus like the plus sign, but the minus sign makes anyone comes after it irritated or angry. Multiplication is parallel for me. All parts of the equation want to do something at the same time. The department line puts all things underneath below the earth surface. Power: I always take anyone the base is and picture babies of it. As a general rule I put all things in the exponent in "baby form". Square root (sqrt): Most of the time I visualize a bus-stop or a giant wooden root covering all things in it.

Now that we have a substitution of all parts of the formula, we can move to step three and tell a story, that helps us memorize all parts in order.

First, we should pick a base. Look around you and take something that you can remember. I, for instance, have a glass of water in front of me, that I am going to use as my base. It is a good idea to take a separate base for each formula to avoid confusion.

We will memorize this formula: (x - y)^3 = x^3 - 3x^2y + 3xy^2 - y^3

Our formula parts are:

x... X-ray fish (a fish with a highly transparent body) y... Yak (The yak is a long-haired bovine found throughout the Himalayan region)

Now, I will visualize my glass of water and create a story of all parts while reading the formula from left to right:


There is a giant glass of water in front of my table. In it, a x-ray fish and a yak are fighting to save their children from drowning. Two fish-yak baby hybrids made it already out of the glass, the third one is just getting pushed up by the angry yak. The yak is angry, because he told the kits not to play near the giant water-glass and yet they did and fall into it. All this is getting observed by an x-ray fish mum walking by, carrying her three babies safely on her shoulders. (picture a fish with shoulders and walking on their fins.)

The mum fish is so in a brown study, that she oversees three other animals and crashes with them: an x-ray fish father, with his two kits (twins!) and a yak mum pushing an empty baby buggy. And an invisible animal which she cannot see, but smell: it smells awful! "Can't you pay attentiveness when you are walking?" the three animals yell at the mum angrily.

The mother-fish walks away and after some time she thinks she has a deja-vu: Again, three animals (those invisible animals admittedly stink - what are they?) are walking towards her. But when she looks closer, she sees that this time there are no kits on the fish-shoulders, but twins on the yak-shoulder, while the baby buggy is still empty. The mother-fish avoids crashing into them and all pass by happily.

The mum fish looks back, wondering why the yak is carrying their kits on the shoulder instead of putting them in the baby buggy, as she crashes into a big body-builder-yak. "Where are you finding at?" the body-builder-yak is yelling. The mum fish ducks and walks faster to get away. What a yak! He had muscles that looked like three kits are sitting on his back!

I advise to go through the story in your head and look at the formula at the same time to make sure you have memorized all things correctly.

After that, you should be able to write the formula down without finding at it again. If that is not the case I advise to create your own story.

To create a story that you can remember it is prominent to not just put story parts together, but let them interact with each other. I, for instance, would not let the mother-fish just walk down the road finding those two hybrid families. By letting her crash into them, I created a connection I will memorize. Then I used the similarity of 3x^2y and 3xy^2 to my advantage by letting her have a deja-vu.

This technique might look involved when you read it the first time, but is not when you used it once on your own. Just try it on a simple formula like this one: V = (4 pi r^3) / 3

Algebra for Beginners - Tips To become An Algebra Star

Many people are kind of weak in the area of algebra mathematics. A lot of them read books, attend lessons and explore the web to find information, interactive lessons and websites that could help them heighten their algebra skills. Interactive learning (e.g. Online courses) is far more fun and keen than reading algebra books. But can interactive learning alone help you become an algebra star?

- There are thousands of Algebra books out there that break down algebra to its easiest components. Not all books are good but some are as a matter of fact exceptional. (Tip: Go to college bookstores. They by all means; of course have algebra texts or books that you can borrow or take away). Don't stick with one book or lesson. Many books construe some algebra concepts good than other. Select a variety of books or online courses.

- You can get a live tutor. Eveeybody needs a tutor from time to time! It will be much easier to learn from person who's already customary with the concepts of algebra. Some schools offer no cost tutors to help you straight through the basics of algebra. Just make sure you get a skilled one.

- Join a website and go straight through some online courses. You will love it! There are online communities where people discuss their algebra problems and help each other. There are a lot of websites gift free online math lessons. Join them. Have some fun.

Even if you are a member of one the many favorite interactive algebra communities you still need to study and practise a lot. You can consolidate learning and practising with interactive lessons which is fun. Interactive courses, Math labs, Algebra Tutorials and Books are great but what's as a matter of fact importand and efficient is to do some homework.

I spend a lot of time at my seminars and workshops, on the phone and via email discussing the branch of homework organization. Actually, I spend a lot of time listening to parents complain that their children's homework disorganization is driving everyone crazy!

Many students have such a hard time getting it together that by the time they finally sit down to do their homework, they are exhausted. No wonder they don't want to do it! Getting organized will help alleviate exhaustion, bad attitudes, procrastination and rebelliousness.

Homework organization just makes life easier for everyone.

These are the homework organization tips that I use as a student, instructor and parent. Print this list and read it with your children. Then, post it on the fridge and refer to it often so that everyone (parents, kids, babysitters, grandparents) will be on the same organized page.

At School:
Write down every, singular homework assignment in one place. I strongly recommend using a bound or wire notebook- assuredly Not a loose leaf binder. I don't care how true you are, pages will fall out, and then what? You won't know what to do nor when to do it! A plain notebook is fine, but a datebook or calendar is the best. Some schools even contribute these to students. Use it.
Write down homework assignments as you get them. This is mostly for older students that change classes and teachers, but it is a good habit for everyone. If the instructor says, "Oh, tonight I want you to read lesson 4," write that down in your notebook.
Write down every, singular due date for a project or paper- even if you have a handout or syllabus. Handouts disappear (I think they hang out with loose socks), but you will still know what to do and when to do it if you have everything written down in your homework notebook.
Keep All of the day's homework assignments together in one place. Don't have a extra place or page for math, other for writing, etc. You want to see everything in one spot.
Check your homework notebook Three (3) Times A Day: Before you leave school (or each class), double check to make determined that you have everything (books, paper, materials, etc.) that you will need later.

At Home:

Before you start doing your homework, look at your notebook and make sure that you are doing the right assignment, the right page, etc.
Before you put everything away, take one more quick look. Did you do everything? Good!
Make a decision about where you will put your completed homework: into a binder pocket, a extra homework folder, etc. You may rule to have a color-coded briefcase for each class. If you choose to use folders, I strongly recommend using 3-hole punched folders and holding them together in a 3-ring binder. Whatever you choose, stick to it! Don't put your homework in your a binder today, a briefcase tomorrow... And, never, ever fold your homework into a book or throw it loose into your backpack! Shudder!
Use your Magic Homework Box. You do have one, don't you? The Magic Homework Box is a box with all of the homework supplies and materials a trainee needs on a quarterly basis. These supplies only come out of the Magic Homework Box while homework time, so you all the time have what you need. Now, that's magic!
Clean up as soon as you are fulfilled, with your homework. Now, not later! Put completed pages in your homework folder, then put the briefcase and homework notebook in your backpack. Not only will mornings will be less crazy, you won't have to sit in class knowing that you did your homework and forgot it at home (doh!). Don't forget to put away the dictionary and any other books you may have used.
Remember to put everything back into your Magic Homework Box. In my house, homework is not "done" until everything is cleaned up and put away.
Keep your backpack organized. Throw away all of those candy wrappers and random pieces of paper. Keep one area or pocket filled with a few items (pencils, a sharpener, maybe a calculator) so that you can do your homework anywhere- maybe even before you get home! take off any graded test, project, record or paper that your instructor has taken the time to return to you. Why? You might need it to study for a test, for a briefcase or for a project. You can throw everything away at the end of the semester or the school year, but until then put each item in its own branch file, but Not in the homework folder. Remember, homework folders are Only for completed homework that is ready to be turned in!
Don't give up! They say it takes 21 days to form a good habit. If you forget to do something on this list, don't stop trying. Hey, maybe if you remember to write down all of your homework or clean up for 21 days in a row, your mom or dad will do something extra nice for you! (Parents, that was a hint!)

A Note to Parents about Homework Organization

Please remember that your job is to give your children organizational tools and show them how to use them. Your job is Not to compose your child's homework! So, in the beginning, you might check your son's homework notebook to make sure that he is writing down all of his assignments in one place, but you would never dream of calling the instructor and checking. You might watch as your daughter copies the science project due dates into her homework notebook; you will not do it for her.

Yes, I know that it is hard to let go- I've been there! But, we want our children to be organized and independent learners, right?

The Protea house (Proteaceae)

The protea house (Proteaceae) includes a wide range of ground covers, trees and shrubs that often make superb organery plants. While some of the species are frost-tender, they are in all other respects remarkably resilient plants that often thrive in situations where others would rapidly succumb. Poor soils and hot dry positions that scarcely seem capable of supporting life are often ideal for Proteaceae. If any plants could be said to thrive on neglect the proteas can.
Proteas (the term is often used collectively as well as for the genus itself) are a variable group. Indeed, the house was named after Proteus, a Greek god capable of changing his shape at will. It includes some 60 genera and 1400 species of Southern Hemisphere plants, the bulk of which are native to southern Africa and Australia with the remainder advent from South America and many of the Pacific islands, including two species (Knightia excelsa and Toronia toru) from New Zealand.
There is an grand collection of foliage among the proteas. It is almost all the time evergreen, but may be needle-like, as with many grevilleas; long, narrow and serrated like that of Dryandra formosa; or rounded and leathery like the leaves of Protea cynaroides. Some genera, particularly Leucadendron, include species with brightly coloured foliage, the intensity of which varies with the season. Leucadendron stems maintain their colour for weeks when cut and are an important part of the cut flower industry.
Protea flowers are composed of clusters of narrow tubes that are often curved. These 'spider' flowers are seen at their simplest in the two native species and some of the grevilleas. In many cases what appears to be the flower is truly a bract of brightly coloured leaves surrounding the true flowers. The most impressive example of this is the supper plate-sized flower head of Protea cynaroides. The flowering season also varies; many proteas and grevilleas flower in winter, while leucospermums tend to flower in summer. With just choice it is potential to plants in flower all year round.
The flowers often include large quantities of nectar that many birds relish. Some species have very sticky flowers that will trap visiting insects, especially bees an this slightly sinister side of the flower appears to serve no single purpose.
The South African and Australian Proteaceae tend to be at their best in warm, dry conditions and often thrive in coastal areas. Inland, unseasonable early and late frosts often kill all but the hardiest specimens. The South American genera tend to be hardier and prefer somewhat damper conditions. Embothrium in particular, can withstand hard frosts and is grown over most of the country. But where winter temperatures ordinarily drop to -6°C or lower, most proteas require frost protection.
Cultivation
Other than a favorable climate, the key to success with proteas is establishing the right soil conditions. The protea house is generally adapted to mineral based soils that drain very speedily and which often have low nutrient levels. These soils tend to be gently acid and are often especially low in phosphates.
Good drainage is truly essential. Rich loams and heavy clays do not make good protea soils. If you have a heavy soil do not try to improve it by adding sand or shingle as this will often make the problem worse; the soil binds with the sand and shingle and sets like concrete. Instead add more humus. Proteas would not appreciate the rapid burst of nutrients from a rich compost so the humus used should be fairly low in nutrients. Natural leaf mould and rotted pine needles work well. To avoid these materials compacting down into a poor draining thatch, combine about 50% fine shingle grit by volume and combine the mix with the existing soil.
Most proteaceous plants come from areas with low rainfall or where the rains are strictly seasonal. Many are coastal plants although most of the South African genera include alpine or sub-alpine species. Knightia from New Zealand and Embothrium from Chile are exceptions; they ordinarily occur away from the coast, in areas where rainfall is quite high and not seasonal. Nevertheless, they still request perfect drainage.
Although proteas are remarkably resilient and not difficult to grow there seems to be some base myths about their cultivation. Like most myths these have some basis in fact, but they can be misleading.
Myth 1: feeding proteas will kill them.
That's not strictly true. Proteas need nutrients just like any other plant, but their are a little more exacting than some. It's not fertiliser that does the damage but high phosphate levels and intense bursts of nutrients that lead to overly rapid growth. Avoid most normal organery fertilisers, fresh animal manures and whatever with added superphosphate. Because proteas will tolerate poor soils, it is often easier not to feed them rather than risk damage, but you'll truly get best results if you apply a slow release, low phosphate fertiliser in late winter and mid summer. This will keep the plants growing gently but steadily; any bolting into growth tends to weaken them.
Myth 2: proteas only grow near the coast.
Not true. Many proteaceous plants come from inland areas. They will tolerate salt breezes but there is no normal preference for coastal conditions.
Myth 3: proteas like wind.
That's also not entirely true. Proteaceous plants do not tolerate wet foliage or high humidity for long periods and in areas prone to these conditions extra ventilation will help reduce the incidence of fungal diseases. However, most proteas have brittle branches that snap or split in strong winds so there's no reason to reason that they prefer windy locations.
Myth 4: proteas need a hot sunny position.
Yes, most Proteaceae prefer full sun or something near to it. But that doesn't necessarily mean the hottest, most baked position you can find. Although they will survive severe conditions once established, ultimate heat and drought will cause damage, especially to young plants. Shade from the hottest sun will prolong the flower display and, provided the drainage is good, occasional deep watering is also recommended.
Myth 5: proteas are short-lived.

Some are and some aren't. Old plants are ordinarily removed long before the end of their natural lives because they tend to come to be rather woody and untidy. You can commonly reason on a useful lifetime of at least 8 years for Leucadendron and Leucospermum, and around 12 years for Protea. However, large species, such as Grevillea robusta and Banksia integrifolia, may continue to be sufficient organery plants for several decades.
Planting
Most proteaceous plants are sold in packaging and are ready to plant right away. However, the best planting time depends on your climate. Autumn or winter is best in mild areas as this is when moisture requirements are at their lowest, while spring is the adored time if quarterly frosts are improbable as this allows the young plants to get well established before having to experience winter conditions.
Start by digging a hole at least twice the size of the plant's container, this large volume of loose soil will encourage good root development.. Additional drainage material can be added to the hole if necessary, otherwise planting is just a matter of removing the plant from its container, loosening any spiralling roots before placing in the hole, then refilling the hole and firming the plant into position. Large specimens will require staking to prevent wind damage.
Cut flower use
Many proteaceous plants make perfect long-lasting cut flowers. Leucadendrons in single are widely planted solely for the purpose of providing material for floral decorations. Protea, Leucospermum, Banksia and Serruria flowers can all be used to make impressive large arrangements while the less dramatic blooms of Grevillea and Isopogon are best superior to more dainty work.
Some flowers, particularly goblet-shaped Protea flowers dry well although they do tend to disintegrate rather suddenly after a few months. Other genera such as Banksia and Leucadendron furnish seed heads or cones that can be used in dried arrangements.
Pruning
Most proteaceous plants need occasional trimming and tidying. This may be to improve their growth habit or to take off old flowers or seed heads that have come to be dry and unsightly.
How far to cut back is the usual question. This varies with the genera, although as a rule only light pruning is recommended as there is a normal reluctance among proteas to reshoot from bare wood. Of the base genera Banksia and Grevillea will withstand hard trimming, as will Leucadendron, Telopea and Mimetes, but pruning of Dryandra, Leucospermum, Serruria, Paranomus and most Protea species should be restricted to a light annual trimming.
The best time to prune is ordinarily immediately after flowering unless you want to leave a few seed heads to mature for use as dried decorations. In areas where there is the possibility of frost damage, it is advisable to leave pruning autumn and winter-flowering plants until spring.
Container Growing
Some proteaceae can make good holder plants, but you will have to be just with your choice of potting mixes and fertilisers. Potting mixes need to be very free draining and often advantage from added base material such as shingle chips or pumice. Bark based mixes seem to work well but some growers feel they furnish too much ethylene, which may harm the plants in the long run. Many market growers use soil based mixes and they commonly prefer relatively poor and gritty volcanic soils.
Even plants with low nutrient demands will at last exhaust their potting mix, so you will have to apply fertiliser occasionally. Use mild liquid fertilisers or special low-phosphate slow publish pellets. provided you are cautious the plants should sass well.
Propagation
Proteas can be frustratingly difficult plants to propagate. Fresh seed often germinates well only for the seedlings to collapse after a few weeks. This is ordinarily due to a fungal disease that blackens the foliage and at last kills the young seedlings. quarterly fungicide applications are important. Prick out the young seedlings into a coarse, free draining, unfertilised potting mix once they have their first true leaves.
Cultivars and selected forms must be propagated vegetatively. The usual formula is firm semi-ripe cuttings in late summer and autumn. The success rate varies markedly; some cultivars, such as Leucadendron 'Safari Sunset', assault quite truly while many others may be virtually impossible without professional equipment.
Pests and Diseases
Grown under the right conditions proteaceous plants are relatively free of pests and diseases, or rather they're not attacked by whatever out of the ordinary. The most widespread problems are leaf roller caterpillars and scale insects, which can at last lead to sooty mould.
When growing proteas from seed you will doubtless lose some to the fungal disease mentioned above. This disease, which appears to be a type of damping off, can sometimes also assault more mature plants. It appears to be far worse in excessively wet conditions or after long periods of high humidity. Good ventilation and avoidance of overcrowding are sufficient preventatives and quarterly spraying with fungicides may operate the problem.
Common genera
Many of these plants are not widely ready at organery centres, although expert growers would reconsider them to be just the most base genera and are likely to stock others as well. All of the species and genera covered here are evergreen unless otherwise stated.
Aulax
This is a South African genus of small to medium sized shrubs. This genus and Leucadendron are the only dioecious (separate male and female plants) members of the Proteaceae. Seed of all three species, Aulax cancellata, Aulax pallasia and Aulax umbellata, is ready but only Aulax cancellata is commonly planted. It grows to 1.5-2m × 1m and has fine needle-like leaves. In spring, female plants furnish red edged yellow flowers that develop into red seed cones. The catkin-like male flowers are yellow, as are those of Aulax pallasia and Aulax umbellata, the female flowers of which are not very showy. Aulax pallasia grows to about 3 m and Aulax umbellata about 1.5m. All are hardy to about -5°C and are ordinarily raised from seed.
Banksia
An Australian genus of about 60 species, ranging in size from ground covers to medium-sized trees. Creamy yellow to light golden-yellow is the sublime colour range, although a few species, such as Banksia ericifolia and Banksia praemorsa, have golden-orange flowers and those of Banksia coccinea are red. Most species have narrow serrated leaves that are mid to deep green above and silvery grey on the undersides but Banksia ericifolia has fine needle-like leaves. They are composed of a woolly central cone surrounded by overlapping, upward-facing, petal-like, deep reddish-pink bracts tipped with a fringe of black hairs. Many forms with varying colours of bract and tip hairs are grown. several other species, such as Protea magnifica and Protea laurifolia, have similar flowers.
The central cone, often with many incurving styles, is base to all Protea species but the arrangement of the bracts varies. Many have them arranged in a stellate or star-shaped fashion. The King Protea (Protea cynaroides) is the best known of this type. Its flowers can be up to 300mm in diameter. The flowers of the king protea face upwards but others, such as greenish-yellow-flowered Protea sulphurea, have downward facing flowers.
The foliage is also variable. It may be needle-like, as in Protea nana, lanceolate, oblong or rounded. It can be silvery grey, glaucous or appealing green depending on the species and it may or may not be tomentose.

The branch of prophecy, prophesying, and prophets has caught the attentiveness of many believers today, so I thought I would take the time to weigh in on this foremost but controversial area.

It appears that some reject the idea of New Testament prophets in the church today. Some believe that since the canonization of the scriptures the gift of prophecy as well as the office of the prophet has ceased and they are no longer needed today.

Personally, I think there is a lack of underlying knowledge and comprehension in the Body of Christ when it comes to the whole arena of prophecy, prophesying, and prophets.

Compound the issue with the misuse and abuse of the gifts and callings of some who relate these things and you end up with confusion, misinformation, and mistrust of anything prophetic in nature. So, let us begin by defining what prophecy is.

What Is Prophecy?

Prophecy is simply anointed speech. To prophesy is to speak under the anointing and inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Therefore anything moved by the Spirit of God can prophesy. Having this comprehension in mind, in my opinion:

There are three levels or spheres in which one may prophesy. They are:

1) The spirit of prophecy (Rev. 19:10)

2) The gift of prophecy (Rom. 12:6; 1 Cor. 12:10, 14:3,6)

3) The office of the prophet (Acts 11:27, 13:1; Eph. 4:11)

A man who prophesies may do so from whether of three levels or spheres. However, each level or sphere of prophecy has a dissimilar purpose or function and carries with it a dissimilar measure (Gk. Metron).

A measure is a sphere of authority and work on of ministry, and represents in some cases whether an organic or valid authority (2 Cor. 10:13-16).

One who prophesies may control prophetically in one, two, or all three spheres or levels of prophecy depending on their gifts and calling.

All prophets (and all who prophesy) do not have the same prophetic measure. Some have a measure that only extends to a specific geographical or relational setting, such as to the local church, some to their city, some to a single nation, some to varied nations of the world (2 Cor. 10:13-16).

A) The spirit of Prophecy:

Whenever a man speaks under the anointing while giving testimony about Jesus Christ they are speaking by the spirit of prophecy (Rev. 19:10).

Just because a man has, can, or will prophesy does not mean he or she is a prophet or has the gift of prophecy. It simply means they are speaking under the anointing or inspiration of God in a single time and place.

The word prophet is a normal term applied to one who is known and recognized by the Body of Christ as one who prophesies, whether it is fore-telling or forth-telling. Still, this does not equate to or imply that one is called to the office of a prophet.

Often, prophesying (speaking under the inspiration and anointing of the Holy Spirit) occurs in a setting where the speaker and/or the hearers are not even aware that the spirit or gift of prophecy is in performance at all.

All believers may prophesy by virtue of the spirit of prophecy, while some may prophesy straight through the gift of prophecy and others from the office of the prophet. This can occur in any setting where the purpose is to share Christ with one another (1 Cor. 14:31).

Yet, regardless of the setting, there is a variation between one who prophesies and one who is called to the office of a prophet.

B) The Gift of Prophecy:

One who prophesies (level 1, 2) whether by the spirit of prophecy or the gift of prophecy may only prophesy edification, exhortation, and comfort (1 Cor. 14:3). This is the extent of their prophetic measure.

However, a prophet (one called to the office of prophet) has a greater measure and function of authority than others who can merely prophesy.

So, when we think of prophecy and prophesying we must distinguish between what level or sphere of ministry is in performance (i.e. Spirit of prophecy, gift of prophecy, or office of prophet). Without the advantage of knowing there are distinctions in the levels or spheres of prophecy, one may indeed confuse one level for another and misunderstand the performance and working of the Spirit.

C) The Office of the Prophet:

It is held by some that there are no New Testament era prophets that control as they did in the Old Testament. I would agree a prophet in the New Testament church does not have the same function as a prophet in the Old Testament.

However, the scriptures clearly teach there are prophets set in the church today (1 Cor. 12:28).

The New Testament order of the five-fold ministry of apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, and instructor are essentially extensions of the very ministry of Christ and are designated as gifts (Gk. Doma) or presents to men (Eph. 4:11). These gifts will serve the Body of Christ until Jesus returns.

In contrast, the Old Testament prophets did not have an office or function equivalent to the New Testament office today. They were a class and breed of their own, sent by Jehovah as seers to guide Israel and her leadership. With the exception of Samuel they had no ecclesiastical or priestly function.

That being said, there was also a spirit of prophecy that temporarily came upon distinct men and women at varied times, such as Miriam, Eldad, and Medad under the prophet Moses. David, Saul, and others came into palpate with this prophetic anointing at times and have been called a prophet or one among the prophets (1 Sam. 10:11-12, 18:10; Acts 2:30).

We refer to them as prophets because at times they behaved as prophets although they did not function as prophets exclusively. David and Saul were kings, while Samuel was a minister prior to his being called to the office of prophet.

In the New Testament era, Silas, Barnabas, Niger, and Agabus were prophets and teachers who were also instrumental in founding the first century church. Their office as New Testament prophets was an entirely dissimilar function than that of the Old Testament genre.

The New Testament prophet, like other five-fold ministers has a measure that is given him by the Holy Spirit which confines and defines the extent or sphere of his ministry as a prophet.

One called to the office of prophet has the authority to speak correction, as well as admonition and warning to the Body of Christ. The first two levels or spheres of prophecy do not have this function or measure of authority at all.

One can hardly say that there are no prophets today in light of the teaching of Paul that God hath [set] some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, etc. (1 Cor. 12:28)emphasis mine. It stands to reason, if one five-fold ministry gift can be discontinued, so can them all. What is inviting to me is:

There are those who say that there simply are no New Testament prophets today. However, since the ones who are commonly saying this are also evangelists, pastors, and teachers, why can't we say the same thing about them? Where does it say the prophetic office would be done away with?

Clearly, Paul taught that the church is built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets (Eph. 2:20). If there are no prophets today, then we are lacking an foremost foundational ministry straight through which to build the church upon Christ the chief projection stone.

D) Prophetic Problems:

Are there prophets and prophetic population who abuse their gifts? Yes, just as there are pastors, and teachers, etc, who do the same; the gift of prophecy and the office of the prophet are no exception to this.

Any gift of ministry can be abused and misused by any believer or other five-fold minister at any time. To be sure, there have been and probably always will be abuses and excesses of ministry by those who do not walk in truth and wisdom.

However, let us not cut down the apple tree because it yielded a few rotten apples.

The decent and orderly working of all levels and spheres of prophecy is the accountability of the personel believer (1 Cor. 14:31-37). Paul writes, And the spirits of the prophets are branch to the prophets (1 Cor. 14:32).

Therefore, a prophet or other prophetic man can be led astray and misuse his gifting just as any other five-fold minister. The lure of money, notoriety, and fame has led some to make merchandise of their gift of prophetic ministry. This is of procedure an embarrassment, a disgrace, and a shame.

For this, he/she will give list to God.

This does not mean however that he/she is not a prophet (or prophetess) or does not have the spirit or gift of prophecy. Take Balaam for instance:

Balaam was a true prophet of God. That is, he was a recognized prophet within Israel. However, when he sold his gift for money he became a soothsayer and a false prophet (Josh. 13:22; 2 Pet. 2:15-16).

For the love of money Balaam taught Balak to cause the children of Israel to stumble, sin, and lose the favor of God. For this reason, God in due time judged him and left him as an example for all (Num. 31:8).

We should understand that the gifts of five-fold ministry (this would include the office of prophet) as well as the gifts of the Spirit (this would include prophecy) are not given to the believer on the basis of merit or because we are spiritual. These control by faith, and God expects us to use them responsibly with wisdom and knowledge. (1 Cor. 12:1)

E) What about Prophetic Conferences?

In conclusion, I do not approve of the Balaam-like, prophet for hire, industrial company of prophetic conferences that have infiltrated Charismatic and Pentecostal circles today.

This phenomenon is the supervene of the so called, Apostles and Prophets movement, which is merely a rebirth of the old Latter Rain movement of the 40's and 50's.

While I admit, I have attended several prophetic conferences over the past 12 years and have received very correct personal prophecies; I do not endorse the pay to hear from God scheme.

Like many of you, I believe the Lord is grieved and displeased with such things and we as the church should continue to pray and teach the truth in this regard.

If Peter rebuked Simon the sorcerer, what would he say about the custom of charging a fee in order to deliver a gift of personal prophecy today (Acts 8:18-24)?

Over the years I have met several prophets and attended a church pastored by a man called to the office of prophet. The spirit and gift of prophecy flow freely in his local assembly. That being said:
